Coil Springs (also known as hourglass springs or biconical springs) are used in traditional upholstered furniture to absorb shock and give added resilience to the seat. They are twine-tied to webbing on the bottom and hessian on the top creating the 'spring platform' before fill is added. This method is commonly substitued in modern upholstery with zig-zag springs or elastic webbing which are both faster and more cost effective options.
