Unpack compressed cushion foam when the delivery arrives and allow 24–48 hours for it to recover its full size and shape. Include this recovery period when planning cushion fitting or assessing the finished insert.
The foam can expand lying flat or inside its cushion cover. Fitting the cover while the insert is still slightly compressed can make it easier to position.
Why foam is compressed for transport
Foam is bulky relative to its weight. Compression reduces the parcel volume and helps reduce freight costs. The size of the wrapped parcel is not the finished size of the cushion insert.
Receiving and unpacking
- Open the packaging on arrival. Keep cutting tools clear of the foam when removing the wrapping.
- Provide space for recovery. Lay unpacked inserts flat with enough room to expand if they are not being fitted immediately.
- Fit covers while slightly compressed if convenient. Position the foam correctly inside the cover and let it continue expanding there.
- Allow 24–48 hours before assessing the recovered shape. Apply the same allowance whether the insert is inside a cover or lying flat.
Passing the foam to your customer
If a customer receives a compressed cushion insert, pass on the unpacking instructions with it: open promptly, keep blades away from the foam and allow the recovery period. Explain that the cover can be fitted before the foam has fully expanded.
